Fun City

A rather scary thought occurred to me back in September when starting to plan my son's upcoming birthday party. As a mother of three, I potentially have to host fifty four birthday parties for my boys until they reach the age of 18 and would rather I was less involved. Quite a feat for a non professional party planner but thankfully, as they are still young they are more compliant on themes and happy to roll with my suggestions.

There fore we found ourselves hosting a fifth birthday party for twenty children at Fun City, a purposeful indoor play centre in Herlev. 'Soft play' as we know it, generally comprises of a large warehouse type building filled with child friendly play equipment. Perfect for rainy days and endless winter weekends. Fun City is a good example of soft play as it is clean, modern and never too over crowded. It has something for everyone willing to spend a couple of hours playing, whilst our bigger boys play in the enormous climbing house with blackout slide etc their father and I can be found engrossed in a competitive game of table tennis or two.
There is an area just for little ones, a ball shooting space and the afore mentioned climbing house for older children. An adjoining room is home to two bouncy castles and the cubby holes for all the shoes (it's a socks only place). A third area hosts two football courts, the table tennis tables and an area set up with Wii.

If you are the parent of older children who need no supervision there is a more than adequate coffee counter which also serves food and ice cream. Plenty of tables to sit at and couches to recline on whilst the children run off all their energy. Snacks and meals can be ordered at the counter, healthy enough as long as you avoid the insanely coloured slush ice!

On the this occasion we welcomed 20 children to join us for celebrations, it went perfectly. There was enough space for each child to decide their own agenda and plenty of options with which to fill their time. For parties you are given continuous jugs of juice or water and a space for all the children to sit down. We spent an hour and a half dishing out drinks to the increasingly sweaty children, walking around making sure all were well and it was very straightforward. We decided not to order the food due to personal preferences but we did have cake, you have to order their own, so we sang happy birthday and enjoyed a slice or two of a custard birthday cake. For parties you also pay for slush ice, and a giant party bag of sweeties which we decided not to give out, providing our own party bags instead. Then parents started to arrive and we waved goodbye to a class full of contented five years olds. It was great and one of the least stressful parties we have given. When the children are exhausted and it is time to leave you gather your belongings and pay for your time at the door. Then you drive home and hopefully have very worn out children who will be grateful for all the fun they've had and fall gracefully into bed without fuss at bedtime. Well, I said hopefully...
