I love ice cream. I love ice cream very much and there have been times in my life when I have probably eaten far too much, far too often. The first time I bought my own tub I was a teenager but I clearly remember squeezing off the gold lid and peeling away the film to reveal the creamy vanilla deliciousness nestling inside. To this day that first mouthful is one that I savour, scrapping my spoon from one side to the other barely denting the surface and letting the shaving of ice cream melt lovingly upon the tip of my tongue.
Times have moved on for me and I no longer reach for the tub when I am hot or sad or in the mood for celebrating or even in need of a hug. These days tubs of ice cream actually send me to sleep such is the sugar rush that accompanies the pleasure. I know I have a limit and I am content with that, as I say I have consumed rather a lot and tried them all many times.

Living in Denmark for some reason laid to rest my ice cream addiction much the same as my penchant for chocolate and I lived happily without either until the summer after our arrival. It was then, three years ago, that I found Paradis.

Paradis is an ice cream shop that specialises in fresh italian ice cream. The first Paradis shop was opened in 2000 by Thor Thorøe in Århus, following his return home from a period working in a gelateria in Rome. Using the Italian ethos of fresh natural ingredients combined with daily production, each Paradis shop has an ice cream manufacturer working tirelessly in the ice production room behind the store to produce as much ice cream as is needed every day. Due to the freshness and the production method the ice creams are much healthier than their boxed counterparts and I enjoy them occasionally as a treat on a warm summer's day.
This week we have had visitors and following our Canal Tour we checked out a new Paradis just opened off Kongens Nytorv. Now, unsurprisingly I have been to Paradis many times but it is always exciting to visit with a fresh pair of eyes. There were six of us, my children, myself, my father and my cousin who very kindly treated us all to two scoops of our choice. First off to be served my littlest chap soon had his favourite reduced sugar strawberry sorbet cup whilst sitting contentedly upon a stool dipping his spoon back and forwards, ice to mouth, ice to mouth. The big boys are divided between creamy and fruity, one always choosing the sublime pistachio and another chocolatey flavour, the other, who always has fruit sorbets having peach and blueberry scoops.
A great feature of Paradis is the willingness of the staff to let you try before you buy and through this we sampled some of the more unusual flavours such as liquorice and for non Danes, Koldskall. I had a Mexican Hot Chocolate flavour, thick rich chocolate with a smack of chilli just waiting to hit the back of your throat once swallowed, yummy. For some reason, probably three small chidren eating ice cream, I cannot recall the rest of the flavours that we enjoyed but I can tell you that they delicious.
So delicious in fact that my two guests went straight back to the counter for a second round.

I promised my father I wouldn't divulge who it was that finished on a six scoop high.
