Sleeping Soldiers

Today I popped into town to meet a friend, we planned to go to Raw for a healthy January lunch and a long overdue catch up. Thankfully my toddler had fallen asleep by the time I parked and quietly made my way out into the streets. What a luxury it would be to talk to a friend without interruption, able to focus on the food and conversation rather than the door and all the other suddenly, shockingly hazardous everyday objects.
I should have checked the time when I emerged onto to the streets behind the Rosenborg Slot, for there in full resplendent military glory were the Kings Life Guards. Each day when the Queen is absent from the city, the guards depart at 11;30 from Rosenborg Slot and march through the city to Amalienborg palace where they arrive at 12:00. The band of the Royal Danish Life Guards with all their whistles and drums accompany them on the half hour march in what is known as The Lieutenant Guard.
Needless to say the toddler awoke to witness the spectacular and we watched as the guards made their merry way past us on the street, he loved it and has spoken of nothing else since. Little one awake meant lunch was not the quiet event I had envisiged when we arrived but it was still a pleasure and we still shared conversation and laughter. I shall just remember to time the route a little better next time I have a sleeping child in my presence.

The toy soldiers are part of a window display to celebrate 40 years on the throne for Dronning Margrethe, it seemed appropriate to include them.
