Today has been busy, I have made three breakfasts, four lunches, five snacks and a dinner for six. I have been a taxi, a swimming coach, a homework aid, and a reading companion. Cars have been played with, the trampoline has been jumped on, and at least five nappies have been changed. 1 shower, 2 baths and 30 nails shortened at bedtime. I managed to CrossFit, collect Grandpa and fit in some fishing before swimming practise.
I am understandably a little tired and as I was sitting here thinking of what to write my mind drifted back to my pre children days. Long ago I was a single girl about town, living in London. I worked hard and enjoyed being part of such a wonderful city with a great many things to do and see, all of it waiting to be explored on my own terms. That walk down memory lane is a good one, yet the further I go the more I start to remember why it is I built a family all of my own and the memories eventually turn into those with a baby which in turn becomes the timeline of events that have made me who I am today.
Thankfully, moments emerge that give us the impetus to peel away the stresses and chaos of life, reminding us of how delighted we felt when our family began. This bright Sunday in September bought with it not only warm sunshine but also the Christening of a very beautiful, happy little baby girl. Sincere promises were made to protect and guide her by those around, all delighted to be there to welcome her to the world.
Following the church service, appetites ready, we all walked the short distance to the waterside and Toldboden. Toldboden, is a very stylish modern building capable of adapting to the needs of it's customers, all the while producing delicious food. As well as being able to host large events for cutting edge groups, Toldboden is also perfect for intimate lunches and dinners for two. We were a fairly large group and accordingly a space had been reserved for us by the windows on the far side of the room near to the waters edge. A waitress came across and stamped our hands, ready for the appropriate payment at the end of brunch. Toldboden has a fixed price policy so for a one and a half hour brunch you pay 220kr and for three hours it is 295kr. The children are obviously less but again this varies depending on the length of your visit.
The table organised, all we had to do was to dive into the enormous selection of food laid out around the centre of the room. No, actually that is a little hasty of me, firstly one needs a plate, else it could all go horribly wrong and rather messy, but once the long rectangular plate is in hand the buffet is yours to enjoy. There was a bread selection offering a wide range of different breads, all of which looked delicious and most of which were tried by my eight year old. A tray piled so temptingly with cold meats was sitting next to it's sister the cheese board who in turn was positively heaving with rolling hills of various cheeses, none of which were tried by the eight year old. Plenty of salads ranging from potato all the way through to green. A selection of traditional Danish breakfast dishes all of which unique to Toldboden. A very tempting array of muffins and patisserie, all were tried by the eight year old, possibly more than once. There was a table especially for the amazing homemade granola, granola that in my opinion speaks volumes for the quality and thought that goes into the food at Toldboden, it was simply delicious. Throughout there are drinks available whenever you choose, juices freshly squeezed, a selection of coffee and tea and of course water.
The grown ups were able to sit and enjoy the food and company at the long tables, shuttling around to speak with neighbours near and far. Although the room was full it didn't feel too loud and conversation found an easy home amongst the crowd. There were lots of features around the restaurant, discreet enough to be missed but all together creating a warm yet stylish interior to be part of for the day. Should the weather be kind, there is also seating outside and quite a spectacular view to behold.
The children had their fill, some more than others, especially if they were eight years old. They were then able to find a spot just out of eyesight to play and be carefree together, enjoying the day, as really they are meant to when so young. Indeed, as we hope they can do when we welcome them into the world, quite thrilled the day they arrive to take their place in the family. It is nice to be reminded of this feeling as we achingly climb the stairs to bed, bracing ourselves for tomorrow's list of family statistics.
